Thyroid Disorder
Overview
The thyroid gland controls metabolism, heart rate, temperature, sleep, mood, weight and multiple body functions. When hormone levels are imbalanced, it can slow down or speed up the body’s processes, affecting overall health, weight and wellbeing.
Symptoms often develop gradually and may resemble normal ageing or stress, making them easy to overlook.
With appropriate medical treatment and monitoring, thyroid function can usually be well controlled, though long-term management is often required.
- Unexplained fatigue or low energy
- Sudden weight gain or weight loss
- Sensitivity to cold or heat
- Hair thinning or hair loss
- Irregular heart rate or palpitations
- Mood changes, anxiety, or depression
- Constipation or digestive changes
- Swelling in the neck area
- Irregular menstrual cycles
In Thyroid Disorders, the thyroid gland produces either too much or too little thyroid hormone, which regulates the body’s metabolism.
In hypothyroidism, low hormone levels slow down body functions, leading to fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, and slowed heart rate. In hyperthyroidism, excess hormone speeds up metabolism, causing weight loss, palpitations, heat intolerance, and anxiety.
These conditions commonly arise from autoimmune processes, iodine imbalance, or thyroid inflammation, with higher risk in women and individuals with family history.
- Autoimmune conditions (Hashimoto’s, Graves’)
- Iodine imbalance in diet
- Genetic predisposition
- Chronic stress
- Hormonal changes (especially in women)
- Certain medications
- Ageing and metabolic changes
Thyroid disorders can affect multiple systems over time, including:
- Heart rhythm irregularities
- Fertility and menstrual cycle disruptions
- Weight and metabolic disturbances
- Fertility and menstrual health issues
- Mood disorders and cognitive slowing
- Muscle weakness and fatigue
- Bone health changes (in long-standing cases)
- Women, especially above 30
- Individuals with family history of thyroid disease
- People with unexplained fatigue or weight changes
- Those with autoimmune conditions
- Individuals with irregular menstrual cycles or fertility concerns
Thyroid imbalance is often benign in the beginning, but it gradually affects various body systems.
